Victorian Trugo Association
The Victorian Trugo Association (VTA) was founded in 1940 by five suburban clubs in Melbourne’s western suburbs: Yarraville, Footscray, West Footscray, Newport, and Williamstown. The VTA is now the sole administrative body for the sport in Australia determining the rules, promoting the game and coordinating the pennant competition which runs from spring to autumn. In addition to the home and away season and final series, the VTA hosts an annual championship series for singles, doubles and fours.
While from time to time in its history there have been women’s Trugo organisations, since the early 2000s the men’s and women’s competitions have been amalgamated under the VTA. Home and away games are played in mix gendered teams, but a women’s single championship continues to be held each year and there are separate awards for the Men’s Grand Champion and Women’s Grand Champion based on player’s goal average for the season.
Beyond the formal competition, the VTA is also involved in broader cultural events where there is an opportunity to demonstrate the game while educating a wider audience about its history and heritage.
