In the late 1980s, several enthusiasts, including myself (athletes: Georgian wrestling, freestyle and classical wrestling, sambo, judo, karate, boxing. Specialists in Georgian dances and folklore, historians, ethnographers) formed a group for the study of Georgian martial arts, traditional sports and games, which worked as a freelance research fellow at the Iv. Javakhishvili Institute of History and Ethnography of Georgia - under the leadership of Professor of Historical Sciences and Academician Julietta Rukhadze. Thanks to this group and its efforts, many interesting traditional sports and martial arts have been restored and popularized, including: Georgian styles of wrestling and boxing, fencing, archery, equestrian games, garisoba (the art of survival and fighting in difficult conditions), research, study and practical restoration of adult and children's games. Historical and ethnographic materials and descriptions of some of them are included in the book Georgian Traditional Sports and Games, I-edition-2023.
Indeed, our organization under this name (Association of Traditional Sports and Games of Georgia) was established in 2018, but its founders and members, as mentioned above, are experienced specialists who have been working in the field of restoration and development of traditional Georgian sports for 40-50 years.
The goal of our organization is to research, study, restore and popularize traditional sports and games of Georgia, as an integral and historically important part of Georgian culture. To promote the involvement of the country's population, especially the younger generation, in physical education and sports activities using traditional sports and games. To popularize traditional sports and games of Georgia within the country and abroad.
Over the past seven years, given the challenges of the Covid pandemic, our organization has managed to organize several important events and participate in international festivals in Sweden, Italy and France. Below are some examples of photo materials from the event: On September 23-30, 2019, a small festival of Georgian traditional games was held at the Open-Air Ethnographic Museum as part of the European Sports Week; On June 1, 2019, a festival of gunsmiths and baziers was held near Lake Bazaleti, in which the association's demonstration group took part. Georgian traditional games "Dogi" and "Kabakhi" were also organized; In 2021, the association held the first Georgian Krioba competition in Tbilisi.2023. Medieval Festival in Sweden, on the island of Gotland; 2023. Festival of Georgian Children's Outdoor Games; 2024. Ethno Sports Festival "Golden Cradle", near Lake Bazaleti.
We also present several publications that present various types of martial arts, traditional games for adults and children, restored by us over 35-40 years of historical and ethnographic research and practical developments, adapted to modern conditions and safety requirements, eg.:
