Launch of the Mallorcan-Demonstration-TSG Global Week - Italy
The Maiorchino Cheese Throw, Novara di Sicila, Italy, TSG Global Week
The Maiorchino Cheese Throw is an ancient traditional game from Novara di Sicilia (ME), practiced every year during the period leading up to Carnival. Participants throw a wheel of Maiorchino cheese along a city route of about 1 km, using a rope called the lazzata, trying to complete the course with the fewest throws possible.
Dating back to the 17th century, the game is now a symbol of identity and social cohesion. Since 2006, it has been registered in the Registry of Intangible Heritage of the Sicily Region, and since 2022 it has been recognized by UNESCO as a Good Practice for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The participation in the TSG Global Week is scheduled for May 31, 2025, a day dedicated to celebrating the cultural, historical, and social richness of traditional games worldwide, promoting the exchange of experiences and involving people of all ages.
Three teams took part in the event, including the winners of the 2025 Maiorchino tournament, composed of men, women, and children, who wore t-shirts in the colors of the Italian flag with the slogan "Celebrate Traditions, Respect the World."
The story of the game was simultaneously translated into English to enhance its international appreciation and sharing.
We are excited to be part of this precious and ancient tradition.
We would like to thank Olimpia il Mallorcan Sports Club from Italy, especially Angelo di Pietro, for taking part in the first, historic TSG Global Week.
We believe that we will meet again next year, during TSG Global Week 2026
