Giorgio Caviglia, Pallapugno. Cento anni di sfide tricolori Copertina flessibile, Impressioni Grafiche 2022
The book is above all a tribute to pallapugno, which was not only a sport but first represented the identity of the Renaissance nobility, then became an icon of a civilization, the peasant civilization of southern Piedmont and western Liguria.
The author takes us, through the pages of the book, on a journey that goes beyond the simple contest to delve into the cultural, social, artistic and literary implications that have merged with the discipline over the centuries. After the chapters in which he reveals the ethnography of the game, the glory and decadence of the Piedmontese and Tuscan bracciali, the passion for betting by players and the public, we move to the Italian communities abroad at the end of the nineteenth century, in which the practice of pallapugno represented the bond with the land of origin; highlights the clergy's passion for the game, the narration of both writers, from De Amicis to Fenoglio up to Alessandro Baricco, and a rich iconographic testimony by illustrious painters who found in the suggestion of the game a source of inspiration. Finally, the contributions of the Bracciale players to the Unification of Italy (edited by the historian Leone Cungi), and of those of Pallapugno during the First World War, up to the Fascist period.
